"The Gentle Art"

Judo was created by Dr. Jigoro Kano in 1882 which makes it a relatively modern martial art.  Judo evolved into an Olympic Sport in 1964.

There are 2 main tenants of Judo.

1.  Maximum efficiency with minimal effort

2.  Mutual Benefit and Welfare

Judo is broken down into 3 basic components

Nage-Waza
(Throwing Techniques)

This is the main focus of Judo today, taking an opponent down from standing to the ground.  There are 67 throws in Judo with many variations in addition to those.  These include throws with the hand, hip, and foot.

Katame-Waza
(Grappling Techniques)

Grappling techniques are another major focus of Judo.  This includes pins, chokes and joint-locks.

Atemi-Waza
Striking Techniques

Striking techniques in Judo are rarely practiced.  They are generally only observed in Judo Kata (forms)

Judo classes here at Blue Springs Jiu-Jitsu only include Nage-Waza (throwing techniques) only.  Students are expected to attend our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes to gain proficiency in Katame-Waza (grappling techniques).   Students will gain proficiency in Atemi-Waza (striking techniques).  It needs to be clear that Judo here at Blue Springs Jiu-Jitsu is taught more for the purposes of self-defense and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments as opposed to Judo tournaments.  Our students are always welcome to participate in Judo tournaments.  When our students go to Judo tournaments, we will spend some extra practice going through the rules of Judo.
